Ussery was a physics professor at Tech from 1935 until he retired in 1972. He specialized in visible and ultraviolet spectroscopy.
His love of music, especially opera and violin, led to his hobby of making violins and repairing them as a community service. He had been a member of the Blacksburg Music Club, the Lions Club and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was a avid golfer and member of the Blacksburg Country Club.
Ussery, a native of Lancaster, S.C., was a graduate of Presbyterian College of South Carolina and received a master's degree in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., then moved to Tech where he taught for 37 years.
Ussery is survived by his wife, Minnie B. Jones, three daughters and a brother.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, with a graveside service Thursday at 3 p.m. at Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church, Kershaw, S.C. Memorial gifts may be made to the H.D. Ussery Physics Scholarship Endowment at Tech.
