CONGO VOTERS APPROVE MULTIPARTY CONSTITUTION

Voters overwhelmingly approved a new constitution that formally ends one-party rule in this former Marxist Central African nation, the Interior Minister announced Monday.

Alexis Gabou said 90 percent of the Congo's 1 million voters cast ballots Sunday, and more than 80 percent of them approved the new constitution.

The referendum clears the way for national assembly elections in April and a presidential election in June. They will be the first multiparty national elections since independence from France in 1960.
