STANLEY POWERS PATRICK COUNTY

Chris Stanley hit two homers, including a game-winning solo shot leading off the bottom of the seventh inning as Patrick County defeated visiting Laurel Park 5-4 in the season opener for both Piedmont District baseball teams Tuesday.

Stanley finished with three hits. Laurel Park's Adam Hill went 2-for-3.

In other baseball:

Junior Dunford went 2-for-3, including a grand slam in the first inning, and scored four runs as Fort Chiswell knoked off visiting Floyd County 12-8 in their Mountain Empire District season opener.

At Alleghany, Patrick Hall and David Campbell combined for a six-inning no-hitter in an 8-0 victory over Heritage. Each pitcher threw three innings and they combined for 11 strikeouts and eight walks. Kameron Crowder went 2-for-3 with a double for Alleghany.

At Wytheville, William Lineburg scattered two hits and struck out 10 as Radford blitzed George Wythe 21-0.

\ SOFTBALL: At Stuarts Draft, Stephanie Floyd of Rockbridge had a key hit in the fifth inning that tied the score 13-13, but Stuarts Draft pulled away for a 21-13 victory in the season opener for both teams.

Meredith Brewer had a triple and Stacy Reedy struck out nine in a losing effort in William Fleming's season opener as Heritage won 11-2.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Wytheville, Jeff Bourne scored four goals to lead George Wythe to a 6-3 victory over Pulaski County.

Stale Clementsen had two goals for Staunton River, which went up 4-1 early in its season opener then held on for a 4-3 victory over visiting Nelson County in Seminole District play.

Joey Coles and Khoa Tran scored as Liberty blanked Rustburg 2-0 in the season opener for both. John Ayers, who also had seven saves as goalie, and Sean Horne each added an assist. Rustburg's Terrell Williamson had four saves.
