Junior Dunford went 2-for-3, including a grand slam in the first inning, and scored four runs as Fort Chiswell knocked off visiting Floyd County 12-8 in their Mountain Empire District season opener.
At Wytheville, William Lineburg scattered two hits and struck out 10 as Radford blitzed George Wythe 21-0.
Al Holland Jr. had seven strikeouts as William Fleming defeated Salem 7-3 at Maher Field. Tommy Page, Mike Souma and Brian Turner each had two hits for the winners. Both teams are 1-1.
\ SOFTBALL: Wanda Toney hit a 3-run homer and Michelle Hudson added a two-run double as Franklin County defeated Halifax 11-3 in the first game of season at Rocky Mount's Larc Field.
Meredith Brewer had a triple and Stacy Reedy struck out nine in a losing effort in William Fleming's season opener as Heritage won 11-2.
\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Wytheville, Jeff Bourne scored four goals to lead George Wythe to a 6-3 victory over Pulaski County.
Stale Clementsen had two goals for Staunton River, which went up 4-1 early in its season opener then held on for a 4-3 victory over visiting Nelson County in Seminole District play.
Whitney Ashby, Ivan Garcia and Warren Vaughn each scored a goal as Jefferson Forest came into Brookville and defeated the Bees 3-2 in the season opener. Chris Schrader scored for Bees and the other goal came from a Jefferson Forest mistake.
Joey Coles and Khoa Tran scored as Liberty blanked Rustburg 2-0 in the season opener for both. John Ayers, who also had seven saves as goalie, and Sean Horne each added an assist.
