District Chief John Johnson said the fire at 1526 Norris Ave. N.W. was caused by a burning cigarette that fell out of an ashtray and onto a bed.
The fire caused approximately $40,000 in damage to the house and its contents. Johnson said its occupants were staying with friends or relatives. The fire started shortly after 7 p.m.
The Housing Authority rents the home to a woman identified by fire officials as Mrs. Willie Jones, who was at church when the fire started. Her son, Jerry Jones, and her grandson, Antonio Hopkins, were at home but escaped injury.
