BETTER ACCOUNTING OF THE LOTTERY

IT WOULD BE a service to the citizens of Virginia if your newspaper could obtain and publish, on a regular basis, a financial accounting of the lottery.

I'd like to know how many tickets are sold; how much of this total is paid out to winners; how much is paid to the operators of the lottery; how much goes for advertising; how much is actually received by the state.

Virginia was supposed to have a surplus of funds before starting the lottery games. Now we are in a financial bind, so I feel we ordinary citizens are owed the facts.

We were told before the referendum that any advertising would be only to instruct us how to play. I've watched a number of episodes of Lady Luck, and still wouldn't have the foggiest notion of what games are available or how to go about playing.
