RELIGION BRIEFS

THE REV. DR. JAMES SMYLIE, professor of church history at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, will speak March 29 at 11 a.m. at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 3911 Greenland Ave. N.W. The service is one of a series of events marking the church's 50th anniversary.

\ WOMEN'S DAY will be observed Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 1238 Rugby Blvd. N.W. "Ministers' Wives in Song" will be the theme.

\ TABERNACLE OF LOVE, 4535 Bonsack Road, has scheduled special services Sunday through Tuesday. Veteran evangelist Lewis Harrah of Kingsport, Tenn., will lead the services.

Harrah, a songwriter and author who has preached for more than 40 years, will speak Sunday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Monday and Tuesday nights at 7:15. The services will be held in an addition at the rear of the church.

\ A GOSPEL MUSIC PROGRAM, featuring The Seniors and the Spirit of Faith choirs of First Baptist Church at Elliston, will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 4404 Williamson Road.

\ MOMS IN TOUCH, an organization in which women meet for an hour weekly to pray for their children and the schools they attend, is compiling a directory of such groups in the Roanoke Valley. For more information, call Bettye DeBerry at 366-8123.

\ WOMEN'S AGLOW, an organization for women of charismatic Christian preference, will hear a Codie Williams of Lynchburg at its Wednesday meeting at the Woodmen of the World building, 2306 Peters Creek Road N.W. from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Both Williams and her husband are active in the evangelical Christian United Marriage Encounter. Admission is by $2 donation at the door. To reserve child care, call 774-6214.

\ A CHRISTIAN SCIENCE LECTURE,"Government Under the Influence Of . . . " is scheduled Sunday at 4 p.m. at The Roanoke Marriott conference room. It will be given by Barbara B. Holliday, of Gaithersburg, Md., and a representative of the Christian Science Board will speak. The lecture is sponsored by the Roanoke Christian Science congregation. The lecture is free, and child care will be provided.

\ A BLACK AND WHITE MUSICAL will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W. Several guest choirs and soloists will perform. The concert is sponsored by the J. Eugene Young Mass Choir.

\ LAKESIDE BAPTIST CHURCH, 447 Dalewood Ave., Salem, has scheduled revival services Sunday through Wednesday. Evangelist David A. Wood will preach on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. During the week, services will start at 7 p.m. The final service will include a drama of Jesus' crucifixion. A Wednesday youth program starts at 6 and includes a powerlifting team from Liberty University. A nursery will be available.

\ A WASHINGTON PILGRIMAGE to the Roman Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is scheduled May 2. Reservations are needed by March 30. The pilgrimage is part of the observance of the 500th anniversary of Columbus' claiming the Americas for Catholic Christianity during his 1492 discovery. The bus will leave Salem at 6 a.m. and return at midnight. The trip costs $27.50. Call 380-3338 for reservations.

\ EDGEWOOD CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 1006 Peck St. N.W., has scheduled revival services March 29 through April 1. Gerald Stemm, minister of Botetourt Church of Christ, will be the guest preacher. Sunday services will be at 10:55 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. with those during the week starting at 7 p.m. A nursery will be staffed.

\ THE WILLIAMSBURG RINGERS, a 12-member handbell group from the College of William and Mary, will perform April 5 at 11 a.m. at Bonsack United Methodist Church. The ringers, whose bells cover four octaves, are directed by a United Methodist musician, Tim Hein, who also works with a Williamsburg church.

\ AWAKENING, an annual Lenten series of spiritual renewal services sponsored by Roanoke-area Churches of the Brethren, will feature the Rev. David Radcliff of the national staff of the church as preacher. A former Blue Ridge resident, Radcliff is peace consultant and director of Korean ministries at the Elgin, Ill., headquarters. This 10th annual series at Central Church, 416 Church Ave. S.W., will be April 5-8, beginning with hymn singing at 7:15 p.m. A portion of the offerings received at the services will be used to jointly build a Habitat for Humanity house.
