The Craig County Board of Supervisors learned at its meeting this week that the county's Electoral Board and the Simmonsville Volunteer Fire Department have reached an agreement to continue using the fire station as a precinct.
In a letter to the supervisors, Frank Keffer, president of the Fire Department, said the department and the Electoral Board agreed to use one fire station bay for voting.
Last month, the Fire Department notified the Electoral Board that the fire station could no longer be used. This was done to avoid a repeat of an incident that caused damage to one of the department's trucks on Election Day last fall. One of the trucks had to sit outside in freezing weather until late at night, causing water in a pump to freeze.
Supervisor Chairman Zane Jones commended the agreement, saying he will do everything possible to avoid consolidating any of the five voting precincts in the magisterial district unless the voters want a merger. - CHARLES STEBBINS
