5 PASSENGERS HURT AS BUS OVERTURNS

Five people were injured Thursday morning when a Greyhound bus swerved on a slick Bedford County road and flipped over.

The five all had been released from Lynchburg General hospital by Thursday afternoon, according to state Trooper J.W. Hogan.

Eight other people on the bus - which originated in New York and was bound for Memphis - were not injured. Ten others had just gotten off the bus in Lynchburg.

A Ford Bronco, which was traveling south on U.S. 221 in front of the bus around 8:30 a.m., signaled to make a left turn and slowed down in Forest, Hogan said.

The bus slowed, too, but not in time to avoid the car, Hogan said. The bus driver, Godofakahi Cathey Jordan, swerved to the right onto the road's shoulder. The bus struck a sign and turned over on its side, Hogan said.

Jordan, 44, was charged with failing to maintain control of his vehicle.

The road was wet, but it wasn't raining at the time of the accident. Jordan told police he was traveling 45 mph, that road's speed limit.

Jordan has been placed on administrative leave until Greyhound officials further investigate the accident, according to Elizabeth Dunn, public relations director for the bus company in Dallas.

After the accident, a new bus and driver were sent to take those who were not injured on to Memphis - via Bedford, Dunn said.
