The certificates were issued temporarily because of unrelated criminal charges against Verlin Chrisley, owner of the companies. Council reserved the right to review them when the case against Chrisley was resolved. Chrisley pleaded guilty in late January to abducting his wife at gunpoint. He received a 10-year suspended sentence, but must still serve two years for use of a firearm in a felony.
Council decided last month to let the 17 cabs continue operating under the temporary permits until April 21, on condition that Marvin Eanes take over their management while Chrisley is in jail.
Council has scheduled a public hearing for its April 21 meeting to determine how many of the temporary certificates will be issued for the rest of 1992, and to whom.
They could go to the cab companies that had been operated by Chrisley, or to other applicants. Pulaski's only other cab-company owner has shown an interest in expanding his fleet by five cars.
Applicants for any or all of the 17 certificates should obtain the proper forms from Town Manager Don Holycross at the Municipal Building or by writing to him at P.O. Box 660, Pulaski 24301. The deadline is April 10, by 5 p.m.
There is one added provision: Applicants must undergo a background investigation by Pulaski police into character and qualifications to conduct a taxi business. The investigations will determine whether the applicant has a criminal record.
