STOP CHEWING THE FAT

The New Yorkers are here, and they're trying to spread the word: Vegetarianism is never having to say you're sorry.

To Bessie the heifer, that is.

New York City transplants Kevin Cook and Mary Clifford are hot to turn Roanokers into vegetable-eating, meat-shunning machines. They're sponsoring tomorrow's Great American Meatout, which culminates in an all-veggie luncheon at Hunan Cottage at 1 p.m. ($15 for adults, $7 for kids under 10; call 772-3316 for more info).

The husband-and-wife team moved to Roanoke in December. A registered dietitian and free-lance food columnist, Clifford writes "Veggie Table," a regular column in Country Living magazine.

If enough people show up Saturday, she's considering starting a local group for veggies. Roanoke's Meatout is part of program sponsored by the Farm Animal Reform Movement.

National advisers include Doris Day, Casey Kasem, Kevin Nealon, Elvira and Haley Mills. Their charge is to "alert the American people to the devastating impacts of today's `factory farming' practices on consumer health, food resources, environmental quality and animal welfare."

Cook and Clifford, incidentally, ascribe to the vegan branch of vegetarianism - no meat, no dairy products, no leather accessories, not even honey to sweeten their tea.

One of their slogans: Meat eaters are full of bull.
