DR. GRAY TARGET OF YELLOW JOURNALISM

I HAVE LONG been a subscriber to the Roanoke Times & World-News. Heretofore I have depended on your paper for reliable, fair news coverage. For the past few weeks, I have had cause to doubt your reliability. I refer to the coverage on Dr. William Gray.

I have known and been a patient of Dr. Gray for six years. He also treated my son during his adolescence. Thanks to Dr. Gray, I now have a severe panic disorder under control; and thanks to Dr. Gray, my son is alive.

My son had severe viral meningitis, which was misdiagnosed locally. He was seen in Roanoke at Lewis-Gale after being taken there by ambulance at Dr. Gray's request. Once he was seen by Dr. Gray, the proper treatment was begun and my son survived.

I am appalled at the "yellow journalism" your paper has directed toward Dr. Gray. It smacks of the National Enquirer and other tabloids. I sincerely hope that other patients of Dr. Gray will come forward and attest to his competence and his kindness, when he needs them.

I'll continue to subscribe, mainly because you have a monopoly and you have the asset of "Calvin and Hobbes" and "Gil Thorpe." As for the rest of your paper, you leave a lot to be improved. VERA CHRISTENSEN FIELDALE
