WUVT begins its "Radiothon" fund-raiser this week Call in a pledge for a tune and help keep the student-operated station going.
Monday's special program will be the "String Quartet of the 20th Century" from 6-9 a.m. On Wednesday, "Composers From Behind the Rusty Curtain," will air from 6-9 a.m. This program features composers from what was the Soviet Union and other Eastern block countries. Call 231-9880 for details.
WVRU continues its broadcast of a 12-part series called "Thinking About Drinking," Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. The half-hour documentaries explore America's No. 1 substance abuse problem. This seventh segment is entitled, "Teach Your Children Well," which discusses young people and alcohol, including the impact of music and television ads glorifying booze.
WZFM will broadcast live today from the Prom Boutique in Pearisburg from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Prom Boutique is the first fund-raiser for the Giles County After Prom Party.
WPSK will simulcast from the New River Valley Home Show today from noon to 2 p.m. Coming in April will be a the "Make My Day PSK Everyday Contest" in which listeners can win prizes. More details will come.
\ INTERNATIONAL: "Lakutshun Ilanga: Music is a Healer" airs on WVRU Tuesday at 8 p.m. featuring South African music. Part 11 of this 13-part series is entitled "South African Jazz," which examines how South African musicians have gone beyond imitating American jazz to create a new music of their own.
WVRU's "International Folk Music Hour" airs today, 2-3 p.m., featuring progressive music of France.
\ NEWS PROGRAMS: WVRU's "Talk of the Town," which airs 8 p.m. Wednesday and 1 p.m. Friday, features a discussion of the upcoming Follies Vaudeville show being presented by Radford Community Hospital. The show will benefit the Life Line program.
"Speakers' Corner" airs on WVRU Monday at 1 p.m. This week's program is entitled "Physics, Philosophy and Politics: The Life and Times of Niels Bohr." Anchorman Abraham Pais talks about the Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Niels Bohr, who participated in events leading to creation of the atomic bomb.
WJJJ has Paul Harvey twice today: 8:30 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. with quips on events and people, as well as news and comment.
\ ROCK: WVRU's "Long Live Rock," Monday at 9 p.m., the third and final part of a series on Latin guitar legend Carlos Santana. This last part covers 1980-present.
