CAVE SPRING STOPS ALLEGHANY IN BASEBALL

Steve Hawks pitched a shutout and had three hits with two RBI to lead Cave Spring (2-1) to a 12-0 rout over Alleghany (1-1) in high school baseball Friday at Cave Spring.

Reid Herskovitz added two doubles with three RBI, and Tony Russell had two hits and two RBI.

In other baseball on Friday:

At Blacksburg, second baseman Brian Davis was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and shortstop Matt Smith was 1-for-3 with three RBI in leading Blacksburg (1-1) to a 5-3 victory over Graham (0-1).

At Liberty, Michael Thompson slugged a two-run homer and Matt Hogan singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Minutemen beat Nelson County 5-4 in both teams' season opener.

At Franklin County, Phil Bowles struck out 16 as Franklin County whipped Pulaski County 9-4. The Eagles (1-1) scored nine runs on four hits; the Cougars (0-1) had four runs on nine hits.

\ SOFTBALL: At Cave Spring, Jenny Kallio shut out Heritage (0-1) on three hits and the Knights romped 8-0 in their first game of the season. Beth Dombretta and Dena Hartman had three hits and an RBI apiece.

\ SOCCER: At Salem, Matt Harris and Todd Kinser scored a goal apiece to lead the Spartans (1-0) past William Fleming. John Brandon scored for the Colonels (1-1) on a penalty kick. - Staff report
