WYTHE SCHOOL BOARD ASKS FOR 4.5% TEACHER RAISE

A $20.5 million budget proposed by the Wythe County School Board includes an average 4.5 percent pay raise for teachers next year.

Other increases would average 3.1 percent for administrative staff and 4.7 percent for support personnel.

The board approved its budget Friday, but it must be adopted by the county Board of Supervisors. It would require a 3-cent increase in the county's real estate tax to come up with the local $181,000 part of the increase.

The proposed budget includes funding for a new health occupations curriculum, two more elementary teachers, another special education teacher, six buses and an activity van, and physical improvements at several schools.
