3 CHARGED IN PLAN TO SELL WYTHE BABY

Wythe County authorities say they broke up a deal in which a man and a woman from New York tried to buy a baby from a Wytheville woman.

Robert Fruhling, 46, and Elaine Solomon, 35, from Brooklyn, N.Y., and Patricia Ellen Maxwell, 43, of Wytheville, are charged with conspiracy to commit a felony. In Virginia, it is a felony to exchange money for a child.

The three were arrested Thursday night by the county Sheriff's Department. Officer Donna Kolis assisted the department in the case.

Sheriff Wayne Pike said his department learned of the proposed baby deal in connection with another investigation.

Fruhling and Solomon are scheduled for arraignments April 3, and Maxwell, March 27. The trial date is now set for May 29.
