Charles E. Hughes, 34, of Rockbridge Baths, died at the scene of the accident at Virginia 678 and Virginia 39, state police said. Reid Straub, 30, of Lexington, was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
It was unclear which man was driving the van, although Hughes was found about four feet from the passenger side of the demolished vehicle, Trooper D.R. Osborne said. Straub was lying near the road about 20 feet from where the van came to a halt.
Osborne said the van apparently failed to stop at a stop sign while traveling southbound on Virginia 678. It then crossed both lanes of Virginia 39, struck a group of trees by the westbound lane, went over the embankment and struck another clump of trees.
It was unclear why the van had failed to stop at the T-intersection, Osborne said.
Straub, who suffered head injuries in the crash, said he did not remember details of the accident, Osborne said. Straub was in stable condition Friday night.
