BRIEFLY PUT . . .

FRANKLIN County Schools Superintendent Leonard Gereau blames the news media in part for some of the recent gun incidents in local schools. A January series of articles in this newspaper about kids and guns may have given some students the idea to carry a firearm, he says. "I just think that tends to lead to more of it."

So, would he prefer that the public not be told what's going on - that a problem exists and is growing? Would he prefer that we not mention the Franklin County School Board's decision this week to expell a 14-year-old who had brandished a .357-caliber pistol in geography class? Does he think the kid was spending too much time reading newspapers?
