NAMES & CHANGES

Signet names vice president

DOUGLAS E. BYROM of Roanoke has been promoted to vice president in the commercial department of Signet Bank's Blue Ridge Region. He joined Signet in 1985 and most recently served as an assistant vice president.

Also, J. DANIEL PACE JR. of Roanoke has been named an investment officer in Signet's regional financial services department. He sells investments, insurance and trust services. He formerly was an account executive at Hilliard/Lyons and Dean Whitter Reynolds.

ARCHITECTURE

\ MICHAEL HEDGEPETH has been named project architect with Reynolds Architects in Blacksburg. He has returned to the firm after working for three years as an architect in New York City.

COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES

\ JOHN L. LUSHER and HARVEY M. GRIGGS have been named account representatives of Ideas At Work, a bimonthly magazine produced for National Business College. Lusher previously was with WXLK-K92 and Night Acts magazine. Griggs was formerly owner and operator of Griggs Associates, an advertising and public relations firm.

\ CHRISTINA MACCHERONE of Blacksburg has been named senior writer and public relations officer for Education Systems Corp., the holding company of National Business College. She will be responsible for publicity coverage throughout ESC's 15-campus system. In addition, she will write feature and news stories for Ideas at Work, as well as create, advertise and market promotional materials for L&L Marketing Associates Inc.

GOVERNMENT

\ JAMES T. BREWBAKER of Salem has been promoted to equipment and facilities manager for the Salem district of the Virginia Department of Transportation. He will supervise maintenance of the district's vehicles and buildings and grounds. He joined the department in 1972 and was most recently a district equipment supervisor.

\ JOHN L. GREEN JR. of Roanoke has been promoted to maintenance superintendent for the Virginia Department of Transportation's Southwest Roanoke County Area Headquarters in Salem. He directs approximately 15 employees who maintain roads in southwest Roanoke County and the Bent Mountain area. A 14-year veteran of the department, he was formerly a maintenance supervisor for the Troutville Area Headquarters in Botetourt County.

\ GLENN FEAGANS has been named maintenance manager for the Virginia Department of Transportation's Bedford Residency Office. He will oversee the 75 employees and four area headquarters who maintain Bedford County roads. He was previously the maintenance superintendent of the Bedford Area Headquarters.

\ DAN BUCKLEY and JAMES FENDER have been appointed to the Virginia Board of Waste Management Operators by Gov. Douglas Wilder. Buckley is the governmental accounts manager for Carter Machinery in Salem and Fender is the superintendent of waste disposal for the City of Salem.

LAW

\ FRANK K. FRIEDMAN has become a partner in Woods, Rogers & Hazlegrove. KATHERINE BLEAKNEY PAWLEY, VICTOR O. CARDWELL, PRESTON B. MAYSON JR., JO ANN BERNARD, DAVID A. CLARK and DONNA DOWNES KNOX have been named associates of the firm.

MANUFACTURING

American in Martinsville has announced several promotions. DANNY KILBY has been named director of Smyth County operations for the company. He will lead the manufacturing operations of both the Chilhowie and Marion plants.

\ DWIGHT MUMPOWER has been promoted to plant manager of the Chilhowie plant. An employee for 18 years, he most recently served as plant superintendent.

\ GLEN MUSSER has been promoted to plant manager of Marion plant. An employee for 30 years, he was most recently a plant superintendent. He replaces\ BILL CALLAN, a 35-year employee who will retire in April.

ORGANIZATIONS

\ EDWIN C. LUTHER III has resigned as executive vice president of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce after 10 years in that job and almost 24 years on its staff.\ ROBERT T. SKUNDA of Fairfax, first vice president and president-elect of the chamber, will be acting executive vice president while a search is under way for Luther's successor.

\ PATRICK N. SHAFFNER, president and chief executive officer of Sherertz Franklin Crawford Shaffner, has been appointed to the board of directors of Downtown Roanoke Inc.
