SHADE OF SUBSTANCE

NAVY is more than a color favored by corporate types and presidential candidates.

The deep blue shade - as basic as black - is as much a part of spring as baseball season and Saturday afternoons in the park. And this spring, navy is as fashionable as ever.

"Everybody's doing navy," says Frances Kahn manager Rose Dauphin. But she singles out designers Calvin Klein and Donna Karan, and with good reason.

Klein's navy trio - consisting of a collarless jacket that follows the contours of the body, exquisite lace bodysuit and one of the season's best long, slit skirts - is a masterpiece of modern dressing.

In her Donna Karan and DKNY collections, Karan makes navy chic in everything from menswear-inspired vests to short satin trench coats.

Navy and white, the classic combination for spring, proves its staying power this season in looks both tender and tailored. Ellen Tracy's navy and white pieces, sold at Kay's in Roanoke's Picadilly Square, illustrate both sides of the story.

Tracy's diagonally striped silk camisole and short skirt, worn with a navy double-breasted wool/linen jacket, are smart-looking butmake a decidedly feminine impression.

Pairing the same jacket with a red- and white-dotted navy blouse and ivory wool/linen pants evokes the menswear feeling that's infusing a noteworthy segment of women's clothing this spring. But the perennial nautical styles, which often use navy as a primary or accent color, aren't quite as prevalent this spring as in prior seasons, says Lisa Williams, special events coordinator for Roanoke's Leggett stores.

Other colors to watch in the months ahead include:

Brights, such as shocking pink and chrome yellow.

Pale shades from seafoam, a soft green, to peach.

Neutrals and browns.
