The Golden Flyers (2-0) led 13-6 with less than 12 minutes remaining in the fourth period when Roanoke began its comeback. The Maroons scored three goals in a 30-second span to cut the lead to 13-9 with 11:17 left.
Roanoke (4-2), which outshot Nazareth 59-35, fired 20 fourth-quarter shots and closed to 13-12 on Erik Daly's goal with 49 seconds to play.
"I was pleased that our guys never quit," said Roanoke coach Bill Pilat. "In the fourth quarter we started playing our style of lacrosse."
Roanoke regained possession but failed to get a tying shot past Nazareth goalie Greg Gebhardt. Gebhardt finished with 25 saves.
"I've seen a lot of good goalies play, but Gebhardt is the best goalie I've seen all year. He was the difference out there today," said Pilat, who was a three-time All-America goalie for the Maroons.
Daly, Don Treacy, Brad Hennegan and James Kammerman each scored two goals for Roanoke.
Ronnie Davis led the Golden Flyers with three goals and an assist.
Roanoke led 4-1 early behind Treacy's two goals, but Nazareth used a 7-0 run to take an 8-5 lead at halftime. \
