VALVANO DENIES ALLEGATIONS HE KNEW PLAYERS USED DRUGS

A commission investigating the 1989 North Carolina State basketball team was given information alleging that then-coach Jim Valvano knew players were using drugs. Valvano denied the allegations.

"I have no knowledge of players using marijuana or any other drugs before a game or at any other time," Valvano, now an analyst for ESPN cable network, told The News & Observer of Raleigh on Friday night.

Hundreds of pages of interviews and records were released Friday after a judge ruled in favor of news media organizations that sued to obtain them from the Poole Commission. The commission, whose chairman was Sam Poole, was appointed in January 1989 by University of North Carolina System president C.D. Spangler Jr. to investigate the allegations.
