PRESCRIPTION FRAUD CHARGED

A family physician has been charged with one count of obtaining prescription drugs by fraud and one count of failing to maintain records for prescription drugs.

Patrick County Sheriff Jay Gregory said Dr. Cherie Diane Knight, 38, of Stuart, was charged Thursday and released on $3,000 bond. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for May 15.

Gregory said several prescriptions were written between January 1991 and January 1992. The prescriptions were supposed to be for office use, but some are unaccounted for, he said.

Gregory did not know the specific drugs involved. They were classified as Schedule VI of controlled drugs in the state code. The classification includes any drugs that, under federal law, can be dispensed only by prescription.

Both charges against Knight are felonies.

State Police and the state Department of Health Services are handling the investigation, Gregory said.

Knight recently stopped seeing patients at her office after a hospital stay, according to a press release from her office. - Staff and wire reports
