VOTER REGISTRATION REGISTERING INTEREST

If the number of newly registered voters is an accurate gauge, the upcoming election for Roanoke City Council is generating a lot of interest among voters.

In the past six weeks, 877 people have registed to vote in the city.

Registrar Shelva Painter said the new registrants have slowed since the Democratic and Republican parties' mass meetings last month, but they are still running ahead of the usual rate.

"We had a tremendous number of people coming in before the mass meetings," she said.

The number of new voters was boosted by the registration ot 375 high school students in late February when the registrar's staff went to the schools to sign them up, Painter said.

The last day to register for the mayoral and council election is April 4.

Roanoke has 39,095 registered voters. Painter hopes the city will have 40,000 by November's presidential election.

The registrar's office, in the old city courthouse, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

The registrar's staff will have special locations and times in the next two weeks to make it more convenient to register.

On Wednesday and April 1, residents can register at the Williamson Road branch library from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Thursday and April 2, they can register at the Main Library and the Raleigh Court, Jackson Park and Melrose branches from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The registrar's staff also will be at the Gainsboro branch library from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday. On March 28, residents can register at the Crossroads Mall shopping center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On April 4, the last day to register for the May 5 election, the registrar's office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents also can register at the libraries the same day.
