TECH GOLFERS REMAIN 10TH IN TOURNAMENT

The temperatures dropped and the scores soared in the second round of the Wofford/P.J. Boatwright Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday, but Clemson managed to hang on for an eight-stroke lead.

The top-ranked Tigers battled the 30 degree temperature and 12 degree wind chill factor and shot a 297 for a two-round total of 581 on the Carolina Country Club course.

Virginia had the lowest round of the day at 295 and moved into second place at 589. Fifth-ranked Wake Forest was in third with 595.

Virginia Tech shot a 309 and finished the day tied for 10th with Miami at 617.

North Carolina State's Kelly Mitchum carded a 73 and pulled into a tie for first with Clemson's Nicky Goetz at 142.

Virginia Tech's Brian Sharp also carded a 73 but is five shots off the pace in a tie for 10th place.

Other Hokies' scores were 77 by Roanoker Lewis Coner, 79 for Clayton Friends and 80 by Ross Roberts.

Play will resume today on the 6,784 par-72 course, weather permitting. - Staff report
