HOMELESS MAN STRUCK BY CAR, KILLED ON I-581

A 31-year-old homeless man was killed Saturday night as he tried to cross Interstate 581 in Roanoke.

State Trooper C.D. Jessee, who investigated the accident, was withholding the name of the victim until his family could be notified.

However, Jessee said the victim was a homeless man from Durham, N.C., who had been living in Roanoke.

The accident occurred about 8:10 p.m. in the southbound lane of 581, just north of the Elm Avenue bridge. Jessee said a car driven by a Beckley, W.Va., woman struck the victim as he ran across the highway.

The driver told police there was no way she could have avoided the man, Jessee said. No charges were placed.
