FLIPPEN LEADS VIRGINIA TO WOFFORD GOLF TITLE

Virginia picked up 25 shots and raced to a 17-stroke victory in the Wofford/P.J. Boatwright Memorial college golf tournament Sunday.

The Cavaliers had a three-day total of 869 to best Clemson, 886, which led the first two rounds.

North Carolina State finished third at 887, followed by Wake Forest at 890. Virginia Tech finished 11th, carding a 928 on the wet Carolina Country Club course.

Virginia's Jimmy Flippen won the individual title. The freshman from Danville, Va., carded a 2-under par 70 on Sunday for a total of 214 on the 6,784-yard, par-72 course. Teammates Dean Smith and Dan Ladd tied for second at 216.

Virginia Tech's Brian Sharp finished 19th with a total of 226. - Staff report
