FRENCH DIVORCE LAW SAME AS IN AMERICA

ONE MUST WONDER where on Earth (or in outer space) Lee Fitzgerald obtained her information on the lot of Frenchwomen (letter, March 6). After studying, living and traveling in France over a period of more than 30 years, and being personally acquainted with French life and many French men and women, including two divorced women with children, I can assure any readers of Fitzgerald's letter that she is not in possession of the facts.

French divorce law is not different from ours. Each case is considered individually and resolved accordingly, as it is here.

Moreover, divorced women with children have a better deal than they have here. If the divorced husband cannot or will not provide for his children, or an ex-wife who has no means of support, the government provides help for her.

Fitzgerald's letter not only annoyed me, but positively enraged several of my French friends in Roanoke who have family and friends in France. I would advise her to tread carefully in the presence of French residents of Roanoke if she doesn't want to start another French revolution!
