CARTOON'S TRUE MESSAGE OVERLOOKED

THE LETTERS by Howard Dickerson March 12 and Sharon S. Wood March 14 took offense at a (Commentary page) cartoon by F. Meads Davenport. They are probably also offended when the Democratic Party is portrayed as a jackass, the Republican Party as an elephant, and our federal government as a gaudily dressed old man.

Their interpretations are more an indication of their fear of being labeled "hillbilly" than of an understanding of the cartoon's true message. The message is that our county (young woman carring an illegitimate child) is being taken advantage of by the chemical-waste industry, and it's right on target. The cartoon had nothing to do with Mr. Davenport's opinion of his neighbors.
