CAVS DROP LIBERTY IN BASEBALL

Barret Bryant went 3-for-4 with six RBI and two homers as Jefferson Forest defeated visiting Liberty 12-7 in a five-inning high school baseball game cut short by darkness Monday.

Troy Smith also was 3-for-4 and had five RBI and a homer, while Ryan Gilleland was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Liberty's Mike Thompson went 3-for-3. Both teams are 1-1.

Bryant's three-run homer and Smith's two-RBI double in the fifth gave the Cavaliers the win.

In other baseball:

Jason Anderson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run as Glenvar won its opener 7-3 over visiting Auburn. Anderson also pitched three hitless innings and struck out six. Auburn (1-2) got only two hits on the day.

At Salem, Pulaski County's Brad Burris doubled, drove in a run and scored a run to lead the Cougars (1-1) past the Spartans 3-1. Kevin Alexander (1-0) picked up his first win of the season.

Senior right-hander Scott Phillips pitched a two-hitter, struck out 12 and walked five as Shawsville whipped visiting Craig County 10-1 in both teams' season opener. Danny Lovern had three hits and two RBI for the winners.

After being held hitless going into the fourth inning, Staunton River (2-0) erupted for five hits and five runs to defeat visiting Brookville 5-1. Brandon Harris was 3-for-4 for the Golden Eagles and pitched the entire game, striking out five and allowing six walks in the win. Jeff Woodford had two doubles and he went 2-for-3, as did Brian Worley. Brookville is 1-1.

\ SOFTBALL: Tammy Wilcher, Kelly Witt and Selinda Mithcen each had two hits and home-team Liberty defeated Jefferson Forest 8-3. Liberty is 2-0; Jefferson Forest 0-2.
