BYRD DROPS PATRIOTS 6-2 IN BASEBALL

Matt Reynolds fanned 10 batters and was 2-for-3 with three RBI at the plate to lead William Byrd past Patrick Henry 6-2 in high school baseball Monday at Maher Field.

The Terriers are 1-1. It was the season opener for the Patriots.

In other baseball:

Senior right-hander Scott Phillips pitched a two-hitter, struck out 12 and walked five as Shawsville whipped visiting Craig County 10-1 in both teams' season opener. Danny Lovern had three hits and two RBI for the winners and David McPherson had a run-scoring double and stole two bases for the Rockets.

Jason Anderson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run as Glenvar won its opener 7-3 over visiting Auburn. Anderson also pitched three hitless innings and struck out six. Auburn (1-2) got only two hits on the day. Trevor Willis also was 2-for-3 with two RBI for Glenvar.

At Salem, Pulaski County's Brad Burris doubled, drove in a run and scored a run to lead the Cougars (1-1) past Salem 3-1. Kevin Alexander (1-0) picked up his first win of the season and Corey Epperly (1-1) struck out nine for the Spartans (1-2).

\ SOFTBALL: At Breckenridge Field, Tammy Litton (1-1) evened her record and pitched William Fleming (1-3) to its first win of the season 5-3, over E.C. Glass (0-2).

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Ryan Cook scored an unassisted goal with five minutes to go as North Cross won a nail-biter over home-team Martinsville 1-0. Goalie Todd Johnson had seven saves for Martinsville (1-1) and John Kinney had seven for North Cross (1-0).

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Patrick Henry (1-0) got three goals from Liz Wedemeyer and beat Martinsville 6-2. The Bulldogs fell to 1-1.
