MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING HAS BOND LOWERED

A Roanoke judge reduced the bond Monday for an accused killer, despite a prosecutor's account of how the man chased his victim down and shot him four times in the head.

Harry Buford - charged with killing 28-year-old David Matthew Tolson last October on Elm Avenue Southwest - had asked that his $50,000 bond be reduced to $10,000.

But Circuit Judge Roy Willett would only go as low as $30,000, citing concerns about Buford's prior criminal record and a prosecutor's description of the evidence against him.

Chief Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Betty Jo Anthony said that Buford, 35, chased Tolson down a sidewalk before shooting him four to five times in the head. Tolson died about three weeks later.

Assistant Public Defender John Varney said the shots were fired after Buford's sister had apparently been severely beaten by Tolson in a nearby home.

Buford is scheduled to go on trial May 19.
