LORD BOTETOURT'S PRINCE PICKS VMI

VMI continued its recent tradition of bringing in Timesland basketball players to play their guard positions when Lord Botetourt's Bobby Prince accepted a scholarship offer Tuesday.

Prince, a point guard, follows in the footsteps of former Patrick Henry standout Percy Covington, who has played the past four years, and former William Fleming stars Damon and Ramon Williams.

Prince said he will sign with VMI on April 20, the national signing date. Prince chose VMI over Division III Roanoke College and Wofford, a Division II school in Spartanburg, S.C.

"Coach [Joe] Cantafio said it's not the next four years, but it's the next 40 years," said Prince, referring to what an education at VMI could do for him once he graduates. "It's not just a college degree, but it's what kind of degree I'll be getting."

Prince, also a standout baseball player, said he hasn't decided if he'll continue to play that sport. He is a pitcher for the Cavaliers, who are favored to win the Blue Ridge District this season.

Prince, a 6-foot point guard for Lord Botetourt, averaged 21.5 points and 8.2 assists per game this Prince past basketball season. He shot 50.2 percent from the field and 45 percent from 3-point range. He made 84 percent of his free throws.

He is not concerned about the military life at VMI. "It's just one of the aspects and I can accept it," said Prince. "I'm disciplined enough."

With VMI the only firm Division I offer he received, that made his decision easy.

"I wanted to play Division I basketball," Prince said. "That's always been in the back of my mind. If I hadn't taken the opportunity, I'd have never known how I could do."
