ROCKETS WIN BASEBALL OPENER

Joey Carter drove in three runs, including two with a triple in a six-run fourth inning, as Natural Bridge downed Shawsville 8-2 in high school baseball Tuesday at Natural Bridge.

Jason Knick pitched the complete-game victory for the Rockets (1-0) and struck out 13 Shawnees. Scott Phillips hit a two-run home run for Shawsville (1-1). In other baseball:

At Fort Chiswell, Junior Dunford went 5-for-5 with a triple and five runs scored as the Pioneers improved to 3-0 with an 18-12 Mountain Empire District win over Galax. Roger Lewis had two hits and scored three runs for the Maroon Tide (0-2).

\ SOFTBALL: At Buena Vista, 17 walks spelled doom for Parry McCluer in a 21-1 loss to Riverheads. The Fighting Blues had only three hits.

At Alleghany, Katrina Breckenridge belted two home runs, went 3-for-3 and had six runs batted in as the Mountaineers (1-0) outlasted Bath County 21-19.

\ SOCCER: At Wytheville, Casey Underwood scored three goals as Radford downed George Wythe 7-3. Jason Bowles had two goals for the Maroons, who were outshot 25-11.
