The board gave its endorsement Monday night as recommended by Pulaski Encouraging Progress, an organization set up to promote progressive county development.
The recommended resolution from the PEP organization said the line is needed to meet power demand growth in Virginia and West Virginia, projected to exceed Apco's present capacity by 1998.
PEP's own resolution, adopted earlier this month by its steering committee, says potential industrial concerns such as BBA Friction, the newest county industrial park tenant, "have expressed the importance of a reliable and reasonably priced supply of electricity in their decision-making process in regard to new plant location."
It says the line will provide enhanced capabilities for independent power producers to locate in Southwest Virginia and sell power to eastern utilities.
The proposed line has drawn opposition from some residents in counties through which it will pass. These residents cite environmental concerns and the question of whether high-voltage lines pose health risks.
