CAVE SPRING ROUTS PH

Reid Herskovitz had two hits and two runs batted to lead Cave Spring's offensive attack in a 13-2 high school baseball victory over Roanoke Valley District foe Patrick Henry on Tuesday at Maher Field.

Knights pitcher Kerry White earned his second victory of the season. The game was called early because of the five-inning slaughter rule. Cave Spring is 3-1 overall, 1-0 in the district; the Patriots are 0-2, 0-1.

In other baseball:

At Dublin, Joey Bower homered, knocked in two runs and was the winning pitcher as Pulaski County defeated William Fleming 4-3 in nine innings. Al Holland was 3-for-4 with two doubles for William Fleming.

At Roanoke Valley Christian, Bob Apjok went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and three stolen bases as the Eagles crushed Timberlake Christian 13-3. Greg Ashworth picked up the win for Roanoke Valley Christian (1-0).

\ SOFTBALL: At William Byrd, Marcee Hufton homered, drove in five runs and pitched the victory as William Byrd knocked off Franklin County 8-4. The Terriers are 1-0; Franklin County is 2-1.

At James River, Christy Rhodes pitched a one-hitter and went 3-for-3 at the plate to guide the Knights to a 3-2 win over Lord Botetourt. The Cavaliers (0-2) got their only hit, a single, with two out in the seventh inning. Lord Botetourt pitcher Jernelle Sowers struckout 12. James River is 1-0.

At Wasena Park, Liz Landry hit a grand slam and Roanoke Catholic got past Lynchburg Christian Academy 8-7 in nine innings. Shannon Simpson added a two-run homer for the Celtics (1-0), and Lauren Thelan picked up the win.

At Lynchburg, Karen Fariss and Taylor Copes each drove in three runs as Timberlake Christian defeated Roanoke Valley Christian 18-12. For the Eagles (0-1), Robin Journelle was 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Stephanie Webb was 2-for-3.

At River's Edge Sports Complex, Patrick Henry pitcher Michelle King tossed a one-hitter but lost 3-2 to Heritage. The winners scored two runs in the fifth inning on a bunt single, a walk, a wild pitch and a passed ball. Patrick Henry is 1-2.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Cave Spring, Bobby Warnick scored two goals as the Knights opened their season with a 3-0 shutout of Heritage. Brian Fisher added a goal on a penalty kick for Cave Spring, which outshot Heritage 19-1.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Cave Spring, seven players scored as the Knights trounced Magna Vista 10-0. Chanda Ingram had three goals and Tracie Hagie two for Cave Spring (2-0), which outshot Magna Vista 46-1.
