PEROT CAN JOIN MY CABINET, BROWN SAYS

Jerry Brown said Tuesday that he would love to have Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot in his Cabinet if he were elected president.

The former California governor also reiterated that he would offer the vice presidency to Jesse Jackson if he were the Democratic standard-bearer against President Bush. Jackson has neither accepted nor rejected the offer.

"If we could ever link together, we would have a powerful coalition for change," Brown said.

Brown made the comments, accentuating his role as a protest candidate, while awaiting the results of Tuesday's Connecticut primary.

Brown was asked about his impression of Perot on a television talk show. Perot, the 61-year-old founder of a $2.5 billion computer services company, has said he will run for president as an independent if "ordinary people" place his name on the ballot in all 50 states. There now is a "draft Perot" movement.

Brown immediately characterized Perot as a "two-fisted Texan who knows how to make money" and "was very impressive" in 1979 when he organized a commando unit that rescued two of his employees from an Iran prison.

"Here's a guy who's made billions of dollars. He doesn't like executives taking those big salaries. He knows how to do things . . . tells it like it is. He was against the [Persian] Gulf War, but he's no pushover. He's a very interesting guy."
