BROWN PLANS ROANOKE STOP

Democratic presidential hopeful Jerry Brown is tentatively scheduled to make campaign stops April 8 in Roanoke and Blacksburg, one of his campaign coordinators said Tuesday.

Brown will make a speech in Roanoke's Elmwood Park at 1 p.m. before making a stop in Blacksburg at 3 p.m., said Doug Stuber, Brown's roving coordinator on the East Coast.

Stuber confirmed the appearances Tuesday night in Roanoke, where he has been the past five days setting up the Brown trip and opening a local campaign organization.

But Stuber said the trip still was tentative and would not be certain until about a week before Brown is scheduled to come. "Well, you know, things can change. But this is as definite as we can get," he said.

Stuber, a former Roanoke resident who lives in Florida, said Brown wants to visit Roanoke because it is a regional center of population and commerce, and also because of its rich railroad history.

One of Brown's campaign positions is that America should renovate its rail system, rather than continuing its dependence on automobiles, Stuber said. In Roanoke, Brown will be pointing out how inefficient it is that people who want to board an Amtrak passenger train first must travel to Clifton Forge.

"He's definitely going to be talking trains," Stuber said.

In Blacksburg, plans for Brown's visit have not been organized, although Stuber said his hope is that the stop will be sponsored by the Young Democrats of Virginia Tech.

Brown's Democratic rival, Bill Clinton, has not scheduled an appearance in the Roanoke or New River valleys. Bernard Craighead, Clinton's deputy political director in Little Rock, Ark., said Tuesday night that Clinton plans to come to Virginia, but no arrangements had been made.
