The estimated cost of the complete wall at Withers Field is $35,000.
The wall is to include three monuments - the first honoring those killed in service to their country since the start of World War I, a second for Wythe County civic leaders and a third honoring those named to the county's Sports Hall of Fame in recent years.
Each monument will be made of an elevated platform with the honorees' names on a bronze plaque. The war memorial will have a stone base and flagpole. All three will be illuminated at night.
Donations are being solicited by a Wall of Honor committee, headed by Thomas Bralley Jr. The committee can arrange presentations about the project for civic groups and organizations.
The other members are Jack Hunley, Edd Spraker, Danny Gordon, Rufus Williamson, Mary Kegley Bucklen and Bill Dixon.
The civic monument will include two men still living who were recently selected by the committee for the honor: R. William Arthur, a former Wytheville mayor and retired circuit judge, and James Williams Jr., retired editor of the Southwest Virginia Enterprise newspaper.
Others among the 44 names on the monument will include Stephen Austin, Frederick Bittle Kegley, J.E.B. Stuart, E. Lee Trinkle and Edith Bolling Wilson, who were born or lived in Wythe County and went on to distinguish themselves later in life.
The war memorial will have 29 names from World War I, 97 from World War II and eight each from the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. The sports monument will have 32 names.
Further information is available from committee members or Assistant Town Manager Steve Moore at the Municipal Building. Contributions can be made through town Treasurer Michael G. Stephens.
