STALEY NOMINATED FOR NAISMITH AWARD

Virginia's Dawn Staley, hoping to win for the second year in a row, is one of the finalists for this year's Naismith Award for the top male and female college basketball players.

Finalists for the men's award are Shaquille O'Neal of Louisiana State, Jim Jackson of Ohio State, Christian Laettner of Duke, Harold Miner of Southern Cal and Alonzo Mourning of Georgetown.

Joining Staley as finalists for the women's award are Dena Head of Tennessee, MaChelle Joseph of Purdue, Susan Robinson of Penn State and Val Whiting of Stanford.

The winners will be announced April 5. The award is presented annually by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

Last year's male winner was Larry Johnson of UNLV. - Associated Press
