She's been an SCA representative or officer every year since, and the early dedication to scholastic government paid off in her appointment to the U.S. Senate Youth Program this year.
Huffman, a senior at Lord Botetourt High School, was one of two Virginians chosen to represent their state at the national program held each February at the nation's capital. She also was the first Southwest Virginian to be granted the honor.
Huffman spent a week in Washington, D.C., rubbing elbows and chowing down with Virginia Sens. John Warner and Charles Robb, as well as a host of other state legislators and political gurus.
She was interviewed by C-SPAN and even shook President Bush's hand as he gave her a tiny American flag.
What could these connections do for her future?
Not much right now. Huffman is intent on a career in civil or chemical engineering and will enter Virginia Tech's honors program this fall.
She's also juggling the life of an ordinary high school senior, buying a prom dress, applying for scholarships, eating pizza and going out with her boyfriend.
But she's not closing any political doors yet: "I've not ruled out becoming president one day."
