The proposed new ministry to the community is made possible by a grant of $86,400 from the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) on the national level. The money is part of a bicentennial donation that also will benefit 12 other projects in the Presbytery of the Peaks.
Hipp said money also will go to upgrade its facilities at the West End Center and to begin an endowment at the Presbyterian Community Center. The ecumenical Bedford Christian Ministries also is to receive a grant for its inner city center.
\ GREATER ROANOKE INDOOR CAMP MEETING, an evangelistic series sponsored by Churches of the Nazarene in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding counties, will begin April 8 at First Church, 728 Highland Ave. S.E.
The Rev. Nelson Perdue, a national denominational evangelist from Urbana, Ohio, will lead the 7 p.m. nightly services through April 11. Perdue also will preach on the concluding Sunday night at 6. A nursery will be staffed.
\ VINTON BAPTIST CHURCH, Washington and Maple Avenues, is offering three free seminars to help people grow spiritually in individual and family life. Open to the community, the 45-minute seminars begin each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and continue five weeks.
Registrants may choose from "Barriers to Abundant Living," "The New Age of Religion" and "Adults with Aging Teenagers." A dinner available for $3 precedes the seminars. Call 343-7685 to make reservations for dinner.
\ MINERAL SPRINGS BAPTIST CHURCH, Virginia 24 east of Vinton, will observe Friends Day III on Sunday. Newcomers will be especially welcomed at programs that begin at 9:30 a.m.
\ UNITY OF ROANOKE VALLEY will present a seminar, "Taking Charge of Your Life," April 5 at 3300 Green Ridge Road.
It will be led by Joyce Duco, author of several books on self-improvement and the subject of a 1972 TV show, "The Weekend Nun," will lead the seminar. Duco also will speak at the 9 and 11 a.m. services the day of the seminar.
The seminar costs $20 and will be from 1:30 to 5 p.m.
\ THREE LENTEN LUNCHEONS are scheduled April 1, 8 and 15 at Huntington Court United Methodist Church, Williamson Road at Huntington Boulevard. Those attending are asked to bring a financial gift to help relieve Roanoke Valley hunger. The meals, to be served by three different parish groups, will follow services that start at noon.
Speakers on the successive Wednesdays will be the Rev. Gregory Atkins of Raleigh Court United Methodist, the Rev. Emory Tarpley of Grace United Methodist and the Rev. John Sylvester-Johnson of the St. John's Episcopal staff.
\ BRUCE PENN, is the new manager of Baptist Book Store on Williamson Road. He was transferred from a similar position in St. Louis. The native of Georgia was reared in Anderson, S.C., and graduated from Western Carolina University. He worked for Walt Disney World before joining the network of stores eight years ago.
Penn succeeds Ted Powitz, who has managed the Roanoke store since 1985 and has moved to management of the Richmond store.
