Lord Botetourt player is Knights 1-on-1 champ

Bobby Prince of Lord Botetourt High School earned the Knights of Columbus one-on-one championship, defeating Josh Pugh of Salem High School 21-18. Prince also won the title last year.

The North Botetourt Knights won the championship for the junior league by beating the High Street Saints 61-55. Jeremy Hendrix led the Knights in scoring with 21 points in the championship game, earning him the Rev. John T. Ryan Most Valuable Player Award.

The junior league all-tournament team also included Desmon Williams and Ray Bannister of the High Street Saints, Jason Custer and Ben Bowman of Mason Cove, and Dustin Bilbro of North Botetourt.

The Heights Club Blue defeated the South Salem Falcons 41-30 for the little league crown. The Dick Mayo Most Valuable Player Award went to Jay Edwards of Heights Club, who led his team to victory with 14 points in the finals.

Other members of the little league all-tournament team were Robert Parrish, Greg Harrison and Jeff Akers of the South Salem Falcons; Trevor Plunkett and Scott Carson of the Heights Club Blue; Jason Thomas of the Vinton Maroons; Greg Perdue, Roy Welcher and Lee Suggs of the Williamson Road Wahoos; and Tito Stone of the YMCA Bulls.

In the midget league tournament, the Cave Spring Supersonics defeated the South Salem Orange 31-24 for the title. Justin Shirley scored a total of 41 points in the three victories for Cave Spring, earning him the Bob Canfield Most Valuable Player Award.

Shirley was joined on the midget league all-tournament team by Trey Shifflett and Chris Fisher of South Salem, Matthew McGuire of the Vinton Cavs and Brad Hutchins and Chad Hutchins of Cloverdale.

Two squads from Eagle Rock were winners in the cheerleading competitions. The Eagle Rock Eagles midget league and little league squads won titles in their divisions, and the Mount Pleasant Rockets were the junior league champs.
