AIDS STUDY SAYS MEN INFECT WOMEN EASIER

Men infected with the AIDS virus are nearly twice as likely to infect their female partners as the reverse, according to a study of heterosexual couples in nine European countries.

Many studies have examined male-to-female transmission of acquired immune deficiency syndrome, but few have examined female-to-male transmission, said investigators at the European Center for the Epidemiological Monitoring of AIDS in Saint-Maurice, France.

The study, begun in 1987, included 156 women with the AIDS-causing virus and their 159 male partners; and 400 men with the virus and their 404 female partners. It was reported in the March 28 issue of the British Medical Journal.
