UVA STAR STALEY TOPS ALL-STATE

Virginia guard Dawn Staley was selected the state's player of the year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association, and Debbie Ryan of Virginia was chosen coach of the year.

Staley ranked among the state's top 10 in four statistical categories. She was second in steals (3.5 per game) and assists (six), fifth in free-throw percentage (81.7) and 10th in scoring (14.1).

The 5-foot-5 senior guard was a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and was the ACC tournament's most valuable player.

Joining Staley on the VaSID All-State team were:

Patrinda Toney, a 5-5 senior at Radford, the state's scoring leader (21.3) and second in assists (5.3).

Celeste Hill, a 5-11 sophomore at Old Dominion, third in the state in scoring (19.1), third in rebounding (10.1) and first in field-goal percentage (62.1).

Heather Burge, a 6-5 junior at Virginia, fifth in scoring (16.6) and third in blocked shots (1.2).

Anna Pavlikhina, a 6-2 junior at Virginia Commonwealth, second in scoring (20.6) and free-throw percentage (89.1). - Associated Press
