2 VA. TECH STUDENTS CHARGED IN BURGLARIES

Two Virginia Tech students and former cadets have been charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools for thefts committed on campus, Tech spokesman Larry Hincker said Friday.

John A. White and Kevin L. Lane, both juniors, were arrested by university police on Tuesday, Hincker said.

He said he could not divulge specific information about the alleged crimes because of federal privacy laws protecting student rights.

Charges also were filed at the Montgomery County magistrate's office, but records were unavailable late Friday.

White and Lane have resigned from the Corps of Cadets, Hincker said.

The students also were members of the German Club, Tech's most prestigious social organization. It was unknown whether they've withdrawn from the club, Hincker said.

Tech charged the students with violating the student life policy, which states that any students charged with theft or possession of stolen goods must go through the university's judicial process, Hincker said.

Those proceedings are closed, he said. The university will determine what disciplinary action, if any, to take against the students. As of Friday, the students still were attending classes, he said.

The students will also face trial on the criminal charges in Montgomery County's court system.
