CLEMSON, UVA LEAD FURMAN GOLF TOURNEY

Virginia and second-ranked Clemson tied for the lead at 291 after the first round of the Furman University Intercollegiate Golf Tournament Friday.

The 28-team tournament includes eight teams ranked in the nation's top 20. Only four teams broke 300 in the windy conditions. East Tennessee State is third at 295 and Ohio State is fourth at 298. Virginia Tech is 12th at 306, 15 shots off the pace.

Mark Swygart of Clemson holds the individual lead after a 2-under-par 70 on the 6,900-yard, par-72 Furman University Golf Course. He has a one-shot lead over three players, including Virginia Tech junior Clayton Friend. Friend aced the par-3, 196-yard 14th hole using a 3-iron for his first career hole-in-one.

Tech freshman Brian Sharp and senior captain Ross Roberts shot 77s, and sophomore Scott Rardin of Roanoke shot a 79.

The final two rounds are scheduled for today and Sunday. - Staff report
