SMITH, JAMES R. BEDFORD - James Rufus Smith, age 85 of 1408 Dawn Drive, passed away Saturday, March 28, 1992, in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born September 25, 1906, in Botetourt County, a son of the late James Samuel Smith and Martha Ellen Costigan Smith. He was a retired painter and was a member of the Glade Creek Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Christine Mayhew Smith; one son and daughter-in-law, J. W. and Mildred Smith, Bedford; ten daughters and sons-in-law, Bevie and Kenneth Johnson, Martha and Clyde Smith, Julia Ann and Enoch Bruner, Jeanette and Greenwood Overstreet, Marilyn and Jackson Overstreet, Trudy and Tony Maxfield, Patricia and Kelley Maxfield, Sybil and Mike Wray, all of Bedford; Iris and Richard Blankenship, Moneta; Lula and Robert Moore, Homer, Alaska; two sisters, Ruby Fisher, Woodbridge, Va.; Lois Fifer, Spout Springs, Va.; 33 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 30, 1992, at 2:00 p.m. from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, by the Rev. Ken Burger. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
