3 PATRIOTS GARNER ALL-STATE HONORS

Michael Evans, who averaged 25 points and eight assists for state runner-up Booker T. Washington, is the player of the year and heads The Associated Press' 1991-92 All-Group AAA basketball team, announced Saturday.

Also on the first team, chosen in balloting by sportswriters and broadcasters from throughout the state are Timmy Basham and Troy Manns of Roanoke's Patrick Henry High, Joey Beard of South Lakes and Jafonde Williams of Highland Springs.

Revis Conrad of Kecoughtan was voted coach of the year.

The second team is composed of Curtis Staples of Patrick Henry, Faisal Abraham of Kecoughtan, Darryl Franklin of Chantilly, Duane Gilliam of Fauquier, and Ronell Williams of Bayside.

Evans, a 6-foot-2 senior, also averaged 6.2 rebounds and 4.3 steals as the Bookers' point guard. He scored a record 94 points in the three-game state tournament, leading Booker T. Washington to the championship game. Evans had 27 points to lead both teams in the 79-71 championship loss to Patrick Henry. Evans was a second-team selection last year.

Manns, who plans to attend George Mason, averaged 11.4 points, 3.4 steals and 8.3 assists for PH. The 6-1 senior point guard also shot 54.3 percent from the field. He scored 13 points and had 10 assists in the state championship game.

Highland Springs' Williams, a senior, averaged 20.6 points to lead his district in scoring. The three-year starter is a 6-1 guard.

Basham and Beard are juniors. Patrick Henry's Basham, a 6-6 forward, averaged 13.2 points but had his best games of the season during the regional and state tournaments. He shot 36 percent from 3-point range. Beard is a 6-10 center who averaged 22.5 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for South Lakes.

Conrad coached Kecoughtan to its best record ever (26-2) and its first appearance in the state tournament. The Warriors lost to Highland Springs 65-63 in the quarterfinals.
