SPECIAL ELECTION SET TO FILL DELEGATE SEAT

Gov. Douglas Wilder on Saturday called a special House of Delegates election for May 5 to fill the 70th District seat left vacant by the recent death of Del. Roland Ealey, D-Richmond.

Wilder moved quickly to set a special election, apparently to ease the way for his son, Larry, to run for the seat. Richmond Democrats then scheduled a caucus for next Saturday to nominate a candidate.

Sen. Benjamin Lambert, D-Richmond, said he understood the younger Wilder wanted to run for the seat. The younger Wilder could not be reached for comment.

The 70th District includes about 42,000 residents in parts of Richmond, and 17,000 residents in eastern Henrico County.

Ealey had represented the district since 1983. He died Monday of cancer and was buried Friday.
